Metro BCA Recognizes SESI for Best Engineering Designs
July 26, 2016
SESI was recently recognized by the Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association of New Jersey (Metro BCA) for the engineering designs for two sites along the Hudson River Waterfront at Harbor Square, in Ossining, NY, and The River House, in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
Harbor Square
SESI's work on the Hudson River Waterfront, developed by Ginsburg Development Companies LLC (GDC), won a Metro BCA award for the engineering design of a brownfield redevelopment for mixed usage. Along the riverside in the village of Ossining, SESI collaborated with GDC on the design of a new public park which includes an outdoor theater area with space for entertainment, and a large grassed lawn area for seating. An accessible playground area was built with several seating areas, all secured with a stone wall and decorative fencing. A kiosk for serving light snacks and a public restroom were also incorporated.
The project exemplifies GDC's commitment to be the best by focusing on apartments for rent with condoquality finishes. The redevelopment includes a publicly accessible riverfront promenade, public park, and playground providing spectacular views of the Hudson River, the Palisades, and the monumental sculptures that have been installed. The park has a small beach area, kayak launch, and newly constructed paver walk providing access from the train station to the ferry dock. This waterfront development also included the stabilization of the shoreline with an armor stone rock revetment.
The project site is in the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) and was originally a petroleum tank farm that required extensive remediation including source removal (UST's), soil excavation and removal, pumping of groundwater and installation of a sitewide capping system. A passive vapor extraction system was designed and installed in the structures. The residential building was constructed on piles and the restaurant on spread footings following surcharge. Site Design and Permitting, Geotechnical, and Environmental design services were performed by SESI Consulting Engineers, PC. SESI also provided fulltime construction observation during the environmental cleanup and building/site construction.
The River House
SESI won the waterfront engineering design award for The River House in Sleepy Hollow, NY, a 56-unit luxury residential building with an attached river view restaurant which was developed by National Resources. The overall site layout and building construction exemplifies the quality craftsmanship and progressive design practices inherent to National Resources. The location was previously home to decadesold Castle Oil Terminal facility which housed above-ground fuel tanks and distribution pipelines.
The River House was an exciting addition to the riverfront community with its riverfront promenade extension along the shoreline providing an important link connecting Kingsland County Park to the Hudson Harbor Riverwalk. This waterfront development included the stabilization of 200 feet of shoreline with an armor stone rock revetment, the reconstruction of a pier, and a kayak launch with spectacular views of the Hudson River and the Palisades.
The building was founded on spread footings and slab on grade following a dynamic compaction program designed and inspected by SESI. Site Engineering Design, State Agency Permitting, and Geotechnical design services were all performed by SESI Consulting Engineers, PC. In addition, SESI provided fulltime construction observation during the building and site construction. Structural Workshop LLC assisted in the design of the reconstructed public pier.
